The purpose of this research is to stimulate children's pre-reading interest using the Sugar Method or picture syllables so that it can improve reading skills and make children more enthusiastic and excited in reading various types of books. Using descriptive action research, because the research was carried out to solve problems related to the lack of pre-reading interest in children. The research was conducted over several semesters and involved students of Kiddy Care Tegal Kindergarten. Based on the data, the ability of literacy interest and understanding literacy of some students is low. Of the 13 students, 7 of them showed difficulty in understanding the pronunciation of consonants, vowels, syllables, and words. The results showed that there was a significant improvement in reading ability after using the Sugar Method. This proves that the Sugar Method is effective and efficient to use because the results of each cycle are increasing, namely cycle I and cycle II. This means that from before the action only 6 students were able to recognise the sound of letters or syllables and 7 students who still did not understand the pronunciation of letters or syllables. Whereas in cycle II all students were able to understand the pronunciation of letters or syllables. Based on the results of observations, it can be concluded that children's pre-reading interest using the Sugar Method increases because the Sugar Method is very easy and fun for children so that it can foster a love of reading.
ABSTRAK
Tujuan Penelitian ini adalah untuk menstimulasi minat membaca awal anak menggunakan Metode Sugar atau suku kata bergambar sehingga dapat meningkatkan kemampuan membaca serta membuat anak menjadi lebih antusias dan bersemangat dalam membaca beraneka jenis buku. Menggunakan jenis penelitian deskriptif tindakan (action research), karena penelitian dilaksanakan untuk memecahkan masalah yang berkaitan dengan minimnya minat pra membaca pada anak. Penelitian dilakukan selama beberapa semester dan melibatkan siswa TK Kiddy Care Tegal. Berdasarkan data, kemampuan minat literasi maupun memahami keaksaraan beberapa siswa tergolong rendah. Dari 13 siswa, 7 siswa diantaranya menunjukkan kesulitan dalam memahami lafal atau pengucapan, baik huruf konsonan, vokal, maupun suku kata, dan kata. Hasil penelitian menunjukan bahwa terjadi peningkatan kemampuan membaca yang signitfikan setelah menggunakan Metode Sugar. Hal tersebut membuktikan Metode Sugar efektif dan efisien digunakan karena hasil setiap siklus yang meningkat, yaitu siklus I dan siklus II. Artinya dari sebelum tindakan hanya 6 siswa yang mampu mengenal bunyi huruf atau suku kata dan 7 siswa yang masih belum memahami bunyi lafal huruf atau suku kata. Sedangkan pada siklus II semua siswa sudah dapat memahami bunyi lafal huruf atau suku kata. Berdasarkan hasil observasi dapat disimpulkan bahwa minat membaca awal anak dengan menggunakan Metode Sugar meningkat karena Metode Sugar sangat mudah serta menyenangkan bagi anak sehingga dapat menumbuhkan kegemaran membaca.
